"Bound for Glory
John Wilkes Booth and the Richmond Grays
The Journey to Charlestown 1859”
(“Bound for Glory”)
May 10, 2012
Bound for Glory is the latest article in the continuing series on John Wilkes Booth and the Richmond Grays. The earlier two companion pieces, “Has He Been Hiding in Plain Sight? John Wilkes Booth and the Richmond Grays” (Hiding) and “Out of Hiding - John Wilkes Booth and the Richmond Grays” (Out of Hiding), examined period militia images, searching for the group militia picture that Asia Booth Clarke saw that contained her brother in uniform with the Richmond Grays.
Bound for Glory is a different search for yet another picture. It searches for how Asia’s brother “unsought” somehow managed to “enroll himself” in the Richmond Grays on the evening of November 19, 1859. On that night, amongst all the many men who volunteered, John Wilkes Booth alone was allowed to join his adopted “Band of Brothers,” the Richmond Grays, and accompanied them and Governor Henry Wise on a special military train, deployed to the anticipated seat of war, Charlestown.
